Wales Millennium Centre Welcomes The Return Of Matilda The Musical For Christmas 2026

Wales Millennium Centre is thrilled to announce the return of Matilda The Musical, the Royal Shakespeare Company’s smash-hit adaptation of Roald Dahl’s beloved story, for a magical festive run from 9 December 2026 to 17 January 2027.

Adding a special layer of significance, Roald Dahl himself was born in Cardiff, with the production set to take place just moments from Roald Dahl Plass in the heart of Cardiff Bay.

Currently celebrating its 15th anniversary, Matilda The Musical will soon launch a UK and Ireland tour, continuing to inspire audiences with its powerful storytelling, playful spirit and unforgettable music. This internationally acclaimed production has enchanted over 12 million theatre lovers in more than 100 cities worldwide.

The bold and uplifting story of a brilliant young girl with a vivid imagination, Matilda The Musical has earned more than 100 awards, including 24 for Best Musical. It is brought to life by an acclaimed creative team, featuring writer Dennis Kelly, composer and lyricist Tim Minchin, and director Matthew Warchus.

Writer Dennis Kelly shared:

“I’m delighted that Matilda’s going out on tour again in 2025 and 2026. It’s great to get the chance to bring this little girl’s story to people in their home cities and towns, and to all those theatres where theatre really matters.”

RSC Co-Artistic Directors Daniel Evans and Tamara Harvey added:

“We’re particularly excited that Matilda The Musical is returning to the magnificent Wales Millennium Centre. We know that Welsh audiences will appreciate Matilda's genius, which teaches us that ‘sometimes you have to be a little bit naughty’. Croeso 'nôl i Gymru, Matilda Wormwood!
